On 26 February 1992, without prior warning, the newly independent Slovenian state erased more than 25 thousand of its residents from the register. The erasure and its devastating consequences affected people born in other Yugoslav republics who had Yugoslav citizenship and citizenship of another republic and lived in Slovenia with permanent addresses. Why did the state institutions erase thousands of Slovenian residents? What happened to the erased? What are the results of the struggle for reparations and regaining status?
We are discussing these issues with Jelka Zorn, associate professor at the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Ljubljana, who has been involved in the struggle of the erased for 20 years.
