The online edition of the British daily “The Guardian” published an article authored by Jasmina Tešanović titled “I hope Syria will not suffer western intervention – I have lived it”, on September 16th, 2013. In her article, the author recalls the day-to-day life in Belgrade during the NATO bombing in 1999 from her personal point of view.
During the NATO bombing, Nataša Kandić a human rights activist and the then Director of the Humanitarian Law Center, resided in Kosovo. She wrote open letters in which she described the terrors of the everyday life of ordinary people and she presented information about the crimes committed by the Serb army and police against Kosovo Albanians. She came into possession of this information through interviews with witnesses and victims’ families. At that time, none of the Serbian media were willing to publish these letters.
The letters which we once more share with the public show a somewhat different picture of the times described by Ms. Tešanović from her Belgrade perspective. This picture also comprises the experiences of people whose day-to-day life consisted of crimes committed against their closest family members, refugees, discrimination, and so forth.
