EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: Round table: Public opinion without the public in the courtroom

Okrugli sto slika ENGThe Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) and the daily newspaper “Danas” invite you to a round table “Public opinion without the public in the courtroom” where a policy paper “Public Relations of Institutions Responsible for War Crimes Cases in the Republic of Serbia: Analysis of Key Issues and Improvement Recommendations” and the Public opinion poll on “The Awareness of Serbian Citizens about the Wars and War Crimes of the ‘90s, and War Crimes Trials” will be presented. On this occasion, the findings on the implementation of the National Strategy for the Prosecution of War Crimes during 2020 will also be presented.

On February 20, 2016, the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted the National Strategy for the Prosecution of War Crimes for the period 2016 to 2020. Since the adoption of the Strategy, the HLC has been monitoring its implementation, with a view to assisting in a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the state of implementation of measures and activities set forth in the National Strategy.

The National Strategy envisages the creation of conditions for a significant improvement in the processing of war crimes in the Republic of Serbia, which will, among other things, be reflected in the improved attitude of society towards the need for war crimes trials and the importance of punishing war crimes perpetrators.

To what extent are the citizens of Serbia familiar with the work of institutions responsible for processing war crimes and war crimes trials before a domestic court? Has information on war crimes trials improved over the past four years? Is the availability of information on war crimes trials facilitated? How do the media approach these topics?

The round table will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, starting at 1 pm and can be followed at this link on Facebook: http://bit.ly/okruglisto2312.

Speakers at the round table:

Višnja Šijačić, Humanitarian Law Center

Safeta Biševac, Danas

Srećko Mihailović, Research and Publishing Center Demostat
