SIT Students’ Visit

poseta_studenataStudents of the School for International Training (SIT) visited the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) on Tuesday, 29 September 2015. The students attend various universities in the US, and they are staying in Serbia as part of the SIT Peace Study Programme organized within the Center for Comparative Conflict Studies at the Faculty of Media and Communications.

Jelena Krstić from the HLC presented achievements in dealing with the past in Serbia and the HLC’s efforts to introduce and enforce comprehensive measures of transitional justice. After presenting the general framework for the application of transitional justice mechanisms in Serbia, Ms Krstić spoke to the students about domestic war crimes trials, about the possibilities for victims to realize their right to reparation and about endeavours to establish the facts about the crimes and their victims. She presented in particular the HLC’s education programme and its attempts to have official education programmes offer young people information based on facts. The students showed interest in the dynamics of the process of dealing with the past, the relationship between the regional nature of the war and regional post-conflict mechanisms, potential limitations encountered by war crimes trials and the impact of the HLC’s education programme. Following the presentation, the students also had an opportunity to visit the HLC archive and library.
