Following on from his recent statement that Vukovar was a Serbian city, the newly appointed President of the Republic of Serbia has made another serious mistake. In an interview with RTCG (the Montenegrin national broadcaster) on May 31st, 2012 he denied that genocide had been committed in Srebrenica, thus damaging the image of the Reublic of Serbia, which has previously recognized and accepted the judgment of the International Court of Justice, by which it was established that the Army of Republika Srpska committed genocide against Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica.
The Humanitarian Law Center calls on the President of Serbia to give careful consideration to the words he speaks in public and to bear in mind that because of his nationalistic past, he will be under the constant scrutiny of non-governmental organizations, victims, neighbours, and inter-governmental institutions in charge of the process of Serbia’s integration into the EU. Nikolić gave his commitment to the Parliament of Serbia that he would be devoted to a European future for Serbia, something he must prove by having appropriate respect for internationally accepted facts and by taking responsibility for the attrocities committed during 1990’s, which remain a burden on Serbia and its citizens.
